Ontario’s Reopening Plan: What it Means for Weddings in 2021

After 14 months of ongoing lockdowns and uncertainty, the Ontario Government has finally given us some real hope with the unveiling of its reopening plans today.

The plan includes a lot of information, but I wanted to dig down into the details that matter most for those of you who are planning a wedding in 2021. What does this mean for you and your wedding plans?

STAGE 1: Friday, June 11, 2021

  • CEREMONY (indoors): Permitted at 15% venue capacity
  • CEREMONY (outdoors): Permitted with 6ft social distancing enforced (no max number indicated)
  • RECEPTION (indoors): Not permitted
  • RECEPTION (outdoor): Up to 10 guests based on gathering limits

STAGE 2: Friday, July 2, 2021 (21 days later)

  • CEREMONY (indoors): Permitted at 25% venue capacity
  • CEREMONY (outdoors): Permitted with 6ft social distancing enforced (no max number indicated)
  • RECEPTION (indoors): 5 Guests permitted
  • RECEPTION (outdoors): 25 Guests permitted

STAGE 3: Friday, July 23, 2021 (21 days later)

  • CEREMONY: Larger indoor & outdoor ceremonies (No limits provided as yet)
  • RECEPTION (outdoors): Larger indoor & outdoor gatherings (No limits provided as yet)

WHAT’S NEXT: Friday, August 13, 2021 (21 days later) and beyond?

  • Well, we’re seeing lots of provinces aiming to relax masking laws and social distancing guidelines by the end of summer. It could be the case that mid-to-late August sees a return to an almost normal sort of wedding. Maybe we’ll be back to dancing the night away like pre-covid days?! Fingers crossed, friends!!

The Ontario Government is normally pretty good at releasing more details about venue limits and wedding ceremony capacities within 24hrs of their press conference so we’ll be updating this information as soon as we see those updates.

You can check the Government’s website for more info at: www.ontario.ca/reopen

I’ll keep you guys posted!

  1. Amber says:

Thanks for breaking all of this down as it would relate to weddings! I’m too exhausted to decipher what the government may be inferring from their vague language. You saved my sanity with this blog post 🙂

    • Sophie Branchaud says:

I hear you, Amber! I’m glad you found it helpful. It’s not always easy to make sense of these announcements.

  2. Caroly Gaspar says:

So, helpful for a bride deciding what to do with a July 10th indoor wedding reception! Thank you!

  3. Lisa says:

Thanks so much for summarizing all of this in a much waiver way to digest! Any idea where vendors fit into these numbers?

    • Sophie Branchaud says:

      Hey Lisa,

No word on this yet. The health unit is expecting to receive a large brief in the next day or two which (we hope) will include guidance on this. If no guidance is included you would be safe to assume that vendors should be included in the total count.
